General Philosophy

As you may have noticed, I am interested in the contrast between light and dark, phos and skotia. Thus you may find regions of solid black right against brilliant colors. I do not fear nighttime photography. Because natural light is important to me, I never use a flash of any kind. Instead, I seek out situations and use the right film.

Technique

I like being in control of the photo and thus I do not use automatic cameras. I like to be able to focus on what I want, to use the lens I need, and to adjust the shutter speed and aperture setting manually. A tripod is useful, though the only photos in the collage with which I used a tripod were the ones at Torrey Pines and the Tea Party -- both self-portraits.

Tools

My favorite camera is the Canon AE-1, though mine has broken down and I have not been able to repair it. Every picture on the photo page was taken with this camera and without flash. Automatic cameras simply can not do what a real camera can.

My favorite film is Fuji and my favorite film speed 400. I find the colors to be more accurate and the film more sensitive and precise than other brands.

Tips

A useful tip is to take lots and lots of photos. Do not be stingy with film. Going on a week trip to a far off locale? Take at least 15 or 20 rolls. Take pictures at different film speeds and aperture settings. Don't necessarily believe your light meter in extreme settings, such as nighttime flashless photography. Try to keep notes on what you did so you can repeat what you did with a given camera and film.
