WHOSE SIDE ARE YOU ON ANYWAY?
All the freedom loving and peaceful
organizations support cloning research. It has only been the
war-mongers, the radical right, the extremist religious
fanatics and the scientifically deluded who are questioning
this worthwhile scientific research.
Consider the opinions of these renowned persons:
The reactionary position of the
anti-choice groups is "If it involves an embryo, ban it,"
This anti-science, anti-research agenda is ridiculous, and
it's to the detriment of the health of all Americans. --
Marcy Wilder, general counsel for the National Abortion and
Reproductive Rights Action League.
Scientists have a strong tradition of
freedom, and any national legislation to govern what people
can do in labs is a very, very big step and poses profound
ethical questions of its own. We have seen extraordinary
developments in biotechnology in drugs, therapies and
agriculture; who would say these advances aren't useful and
acceptable? -- Maxine Singer, president of the Carnegie
Institution.
On Capitol Hill,
abortion opponents are energized.
Joined by Evangelicals, the Catholic Church, and some Protestant denominations, they are lobbying Congress to pass a bill by the end of the year that
would make human-cloning research illegal and impose criminal penalties on anyone who engages in it.
In the process,
they want to extend to the full biotechnology industry the current prohibition against human-embryo experiments
that now applies only to researchers who receive federal funds. The groups say the ban would not interfere with genetic studies to clone plants, animals and human tissue, but
scientists insist the restrictions will have a chilling effect on biomedical research.

Clones will soon be a major commodity item.
Economic indicators show that clone technology is already
poised to grow to be one of the largest industries worldwide
within the next twenty years. This is because clones have a
number of medical and entertainment functions--the two
largest industries worldwide today. Soon, experts predict
that cloning will dominate these two industries in the uses
described here, as well as many uses we can't even
imagine--but our children will.
